    Development of a multifunctional panel for aerospace use through SLM additive manufacturing

    Lattice materials can overcome the need of light and stiff structures in the aerospace industry. The wing leading edge is one of the most critical parts for both on-board subsystem and structure features: it must withstand to the aerodynamic loads and bird-strike, integrating also the anti-ice system functions. Nowadays, this part is made by different components bonded together such as external skin, internal passageways, and feeding tubes. In the present work, a single-piece multifunctional panel made by additive manufacturing will be developed. Optimal design and manufacturing are discussed according to technological constraints, aeronautical performances and sustainability

    Evaluating Advanced Forms of Social Media Use in Government

    Government agencies gradually start moving from simpler to more advanced forms of social media use, which are characterized by higher technological and political complexity. It is important to evaluate systematically these efforts based on sound theoretical foundations. In this direction this paper outlines and evaluates an advanced form of automated and centrally managed combined use of multiple social media by government agencies for promoting participative public policy making. For this purpose an evaluation framework has been developed, which includes both technological and political evaluation, and focuses on the fundamental complexities and challenges of these advanced forms of social media exploitation. It has been used for the evaluation of a pilot application of this approach for conducting a consultation campaign concerning the large scale application of a telemedicine program in Piedmont, Italy, revealing its important potential and strengths, and at the same time some notable problems and weaknesses as well

    Assessing the Efficacy of Whole-Body Titanium Dental Implant Surface Modifications in Inducing Adhesion, Proliferation, and Osteogenesis in Human Adipose Tissue Stem Cells

    Abstract: Background: Although the influence of titanium implants’ micro-surface properties on tita- nium discs has been extensively investigated, the research has not taken into consideration their whole-body effect, which may be considered possible using a combinatorial approach. Methods: Five titanium dental implants with a similar moderate roughness and different surface textures were thor- oughly characterized. The cell adhesion and proliferation were assessed after adipose-tissue-derived stem cells (ADSCs) were seeded on whole-body implants. The implants’ inductive properties were assessed by evaluating the osteoblastic gene expression. Results: The surface micro-topography was analyzed, showing that hydroxyapatite (HA)-blasted and bland acid etching implants had the highest roughness and a lower number of surface particles. Cell adhesion was observed after 24 h on all the implants, with the highest score registered for the HA-blasted and bland acid etching implants. Cell proliferation was observed only on the laser-treated and double-acid-etched surfaces. The ADSCs ex- pressed collagen type I, osteonectin, and alkaline phosphatase on all the implant surfaces, with high levels on the HA-treated surfaces, which also triggered osteocalcin expression on day seven. Conclu- sions: The findings of this study show that the morphology and treatment of whole titanium dental implants, primarily HA-treated and bland acid etching implants, impact the adherence and activity of ADSCs in osteogenic differentiation in the absence of specific osteo-inductive signals

    Using Deep Neural Networks for Smoothing Pitch Profiles in Connected Speech

    This paper presents a new pitch tracking smoother based on deep neural networks (DNN). It leverages Long Short-Term Memories, a particular kind of recurrent neural network, for correcting pitch detection errors produced by state-of-the-art Pitch Detection Algorithms. The proposed system has been extensively tested using two reference benchmarks for English and exhibited very good performances in correcting pitch detection algorithms outputs when compared with the gold standard obtained with laryngographs

    Internal radiation dose assessment of radiopharmaceuticals prepared with cyclotron-produced 99m Tc

    Technetium-99m (99m Tc) is the radioisotope most widely used in diagnostic nuclear medicine. It is readily available from 99 Mo/99m Tc generators as the \u3b2- decay product of the 99 Mo (T\ubd =66 h) parent nuclide. This latter is obtained as a fission product in nuclear reactors by neutron-induced reactions on highly enriched uranium. Alternative production routes, such as direct reactions using proton beams on specific target materials [100 Mo(p,2n)99m Tc], have the potential to be both reliable and relatively cost-effective. However, results showed that the 99m Tc extracted from proton-bombarded 100 Mo-enriched targets contains small quantities of several Tc radioisotopes (93m Tc, 93 Tc, 94 Tc, 94m Tc, 95 Tc, 95m Tc 96 Tc and 97m Tc). The aim of this work was to estimate the dose increase (DI) due to the contribution of Tc radioisotopes generated as impurities, after the intravenous injection of four radiopharmaceuticals prepared with cyclotron-produced 99m Tc (CP-99m Tc) using 99.05% 100 Mo-enriched metallic targets

    Pressure ulcers: representation of life and death for wheelchair users

    Pressure ulcers can significantly affect the quality of life and social inclusion of wheelchair users, in addition to delaying the rehabilitation process and compromising the health-disease process. The aim of this study is to analyze the representation of pressure ulcers in the perception of life/death for wheelchair users. The methodological design of this research is applied, descriptive and participatory, with analysis and discussion of data under a qualitative paradigm. Seven collaborators who are wheelchair users of the Association of Spinal Cord Injuries in Rio Grande do Sul/Brazil (LEME) participated in the interviews. Data analysis was performed by using data categorization and triangulation. The results show the negative impact pressure ulcers have on users’ health and social inclusion. The fear of appearance of pressure ulcers and the associated possibility of death, overlaps other situations that may result from the condition of being a wheelchair user. Users are aware that injuries associated with a bacterial infection can lead to death. The need for constant care and dressings, in addition to the body’s own odor, become important limitations in social life. The importance of the prevention of pressure ulcers is emphasized as a way to promote social inclusion and physical and emotional well-being of users

    Knowledge Graph Embeddings with node2vec for Item Recommendation

    In the past years, knowledge graphs have proven to be beneficial for recommender systems, efficiently addressing paramount issues such as new items and data sparsity. Graph embeddings algorithms have shown to be able to automatically learn high quality feature vectors from graph structures, enabling vector-based measures of node relatedness. In this paper, we show how node2vec can be used to generate item recommendations by learning knowledge graph embeddings. We apply node2vec on a knowledge graph built from the MovieLens 1M dataset and DBpedia and use the node relatedness to generate item recommendations. The results show that node2vec consistently outperforms a set of collaborative filtering baselines on an array of relevant metric
